Legislation Status & News
- A hearing was held on Wednesday, February 1 for HB3015 (the Healthy Workplace Bill, see sponsors below) in the Energy, Industry & Labor/ Economic Development & Small Business Committee.
Given that this was the first time the bill was hearing in the WV legislature, committee members had several questions. Delegates were dubious about the actual prevalence of bullying in the U.S., they questioned if stress-related diseases are the result of repeated exposure to bullying, they thought that because the media trivialize bullying incidents that the bill actually did the same. Questions were answered by Gary Namie, Nat'l Director of the Healthy Workplace Campaign.
In addition, Lana Cooke, WV State Coordinator told her story to the committee and made an eloquent case for the need for the "Healthy and Safe Workplace Act" HB 3015.
The committee chair decided to hold the bill so that it can be discussed in detail during an interim session special meeting. We thank the prime sponsor, Linda Longstreth, and committee chair, Larry Barker, for this wise decision. Education of committee members is the key to understanding.
